Ever wondered how we as humans are one of the most irresponsible creatures on this Planet!
Yes, the world is talking about it, the fancy terms and the buzz words are scattered all around, to name a few, its “Sustainability” “Circular Economy” “Social Impact” “Ecological Footprints” and so on. In fact, the 21st century is one of the most human-centric and technology-driven eras, wherein we humans have started taking ecological cycle and nature balance seriously by streamlining our capacity building processes.
It took almost a century for world leaders to come to a mutual consent that yes, “climate change is happening, and its happening now”.
But is this enough?
Is creating a viable ecosystem enough? Is this all about Industries being scrutinized and made socially aware to responsibly bring efficient changes in both their up and downstream processes? Is this all about water, energy, packaging, etc, etc? Is this all about them? about the government? about the people enrolled in the process? or is it about “US”
Yes! it’s about you and me, it’s about us, imagine, a person living in the United States of America has a carbon footprint of 19.8 tonnes of eCO2 whereas a person living in India is around 1.9 tonnes of eCO2 which is ten times less, but since the universe and space is one and is being shared by everyone across the globe; since the mountains, the rivers, the resources, the negative externalities are shared, it’s the poor who gets affected the most.
Rich and the middle-class escape most of the natural and man-made calamities with all the facilities they’ve but it’s them, it’s us, who are solely responsible for creating this mess, we are the ones roaming around in our luxury cars, we are the ones using the maximum resources, we are the ones buying products which we don’t even require, as this is what, that has been fed in our minds by the giants, “purchase” “dispose of” and “repurchase”.
Whenever we purchase and finish a transaction, there’s a cost nature is bearing always, for us, which we neglect, we don’t even bother, as that seems intangible to us. Be it, the t-shirt we wear, the mobile phone we change every year, the flight we take, the email we send. Every product has its carbon footprints, every product has a lifecycle, and believe me, every product is not required!
It’s not required to have four cars for a family of two, it’s not required to always rely upon air-conditioners, it’s definitely not required to have a hundred pairs of shoes and a fifty pair of Jeans. I may sound weird but if we keep on cutting a few products from our wardrobe, our kitchen, our bathroom, our bedroom, our lobby, our garage, and our lives, it won’t impact us, as most of the times, we don’t even know what and why we are buying? we don’t know the rationale behind our purchasing decision, but we buy because we can afford it.
An easy exercise might help you to lead a minimalist lifestyle, it might encourage you to save a bit extra for the future and for the uncalled events such as #Covid19, start listing out the items which you have today with you and which you feel are totally non-essential and stop buying them until your life is at stake.
Even when you buy, buy local, give preference to the brands who source locally and have adopted safe and sustainable practices. Become a #GreenConsumer, create a “net positive impact” on the planet, find solutions in cutting down the plastic you use, the energy you consume and the product you use, be responsible, be aware, be a #consciousconsumer
